Kicking off The Castro Theatre's 90th Anniversary weekend is MiDNiTES FOR MANiACS tribute to not only the greatest movie theatre in the United States, but Disco-Era flicks. Our triple bill is inverting the overused, reactionary and blanketed statement of "DiSCO SUCKS!" And we're bringing to you three gloriously time capsules of late-70s fashion, music and
fully
matured divas. The first is a rollerskating romp sporting
Linda
Blair who
leads
a group
of
teens
as
they
fight
their
parents
and
those
damn
corporate
businessmen
from
shutting
down
their
local
roller
rink.
Luckily
for
them
(and
us),
real-life
Canadian
champion
Jim
Bray
struts
his
stunning
skating
skills
to
epic
proportions,
while
the
camera
zooms
in
on
a record-breaking
amount
of
bulging short-shorts
and
eye-popping
cleavage. (American Apparel literally used this film as the basis of their whole line of clothing!) Add to that Giorgio Moroder's double LP of disco extravagnazas as well as Jean Claude Van Damme's uncredited debut cameo help make this an experience that 90 years of the Castro will truly be dancing along with! Beautiful 35mm print courtesy of Park CIrcus! Preceded by a slew of disco classic trailers! Rated PG. 103min.

"You

And 30

this disco-era
musical not only sports Gene Kelly's final screen performance it combines Olivia Newton-John and
Michael
Beck, who played Swan
in Walter Hill's
THE WARRiORS (1979) as they paint,
skate
and
sing
their
way
through
this
whiter-than-wonderbread
cheesecake, with extra frosting to boot. Oddly enough, the director
Robert

has since gone on to direct the
political-documentaries: WAL-MART: The High Cost of Low Price (2005) and OUTFOXED: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism (2004). Original 35mm print courtesy of Universal. Rated PG. 93min.

- CAR WASH (1976)
(36th ANNIVERSARY 35MM SCREENiNG!)
Written by Joel Schumacher; Directed by Michael Schultz
W/ Richard Pryor, Bill Duke, The Pointer Sisters, George Carlin & Antonio Fargas

Our evening closes with a bang as this Blaxploitation summer classic showcases some of the best music and genuine afros of the disco decade! With a who's who of 1970s African-American performers, this sketch comedy will truly surprise you with it's three dimensional characters and social commentary on black neighborhoods. In fact I would dare say that Antonio Fargas' performance as Lindy is still one of the greatest queer characters to ever grace the silver screen! With Richard Pryor, George Carlin and Bill Duke strutting their stuff, and The Pointer SIsters headlining the legendary soundtrack which the 1977 Cannes Film Festival gave Best Music Award to, you really don't want to miss this UNCUT AND UNDUBBED 35MM SCREENiNG courtesy of Universal Pictures. preceded by a fistfull of Richard Pryor trailers. Rated PG. 97min.
